RIDING OUT THE STORM
Mark 4:39-40
39) When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still.” Suddenly the wind stopped and there was a great calm.
40) Then He asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
I think I wrote this while Steve was in the hospital during his final weeks. It was the last entry in my notebook of devotional thoughts. Something I scribbled down in between prayers for healing, for strength, for a miracle. I knew the storm was bigger than me and I needed everything I could grasp onto to get me through it.
You always hear people speak of the calm before the storm, I’m waiting for that calm that Jesus spoke of, the calm after the storm. For I have battled the wind and ridden the waves. I know my strength comes from the Lord and I know my faith is strong, but Lord, I feel like I’m drowning here. I have had people ask me how much more can I take? And I would look at them and reply, “whatever it takes.” But, I will admit, I’m tired, tired of treading water. I’m weary and yes, even weepy. But I am reminded of Isaiah 40:31. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
I know that worrying about tomorrow will empty today of its strength and peace. And honestly, I need every bit of that as I face each day wondering if it will be his last. Will I get to take him home, for that is his wish. To be at home, in his bed, surrounded with everything that gives him comfort. So as I sit here in this moment and I think about all that God has blessed us with, I would have to say we have had a good life, a blessed life filled with joy, love, laughter and yes even heartache. Even if the storm we’ve been battling is the end of a chapter in our story, I know that it is not the final chapter. So I’ll just turn the page and see how the story unfolds.
I did get to take him home, and I will always remember the sound of his sigh as his head came to rest on his pillow. Everyday he would tell me not to worry, that he wasn’t going any where. I know now that he was speaking of his eternal life, that he would always be with me even when he wasn’t.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16) That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.
17) For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
18) So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
