HURRY UP AND WAIT
Psalm 130:5
I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.
In essence, this is a declaration of faith, telling us to wait patiently, trust deeply and find hope in God’s word.
We all wait for something at some point in our day or life. Whether it’s waiting for the alarm to go off to start our day, for the coffee to brew to give us a caffeine boost, or for our food to arrive, waiting is a part of our daily routine. We may be waiting for an important phone call or for an special day to arrive. How does one word, four little letters, hold so much anticipation. Someone even came up with brilliant idea of a “waiting room”. Even life itself involves waiting, as we eagerly and for some nervously wait out the nine months it takes to welcome a child into the world. And then their wait begins; waiting to be fed, to be changed, to be held. The wait is endless.
You might not realize it, but the one thing we do while we wait is pray. We pray for the light to change so that we won’t be late for work. We pray that the person ahead of us in the checkout line would go faster because our ice cream is going to melt. Every time you utter those two words, “O Lord,” you’re calling out to him. “O Lord, I’m going to be late, come on, light change!” “O Lord, can this person be any slower?” Have you ever noticed that sometimes, when you say something like that, something happens that causes an even longer wait? Whether it’s a price check or an equipment malfunction, he heard you and he’s telling you to chill. Life isn’t always about being in a hurry; sometimes, you need to wait.
I recently overheard a story about a person who was running late for work due to some unforeseen circumstances and didn’t leave their house at their usual time. Once they finally got on the road and reached their usual exit, a major accident had occurred. Had they left their house at their usual time, they would have been involved in that accident. You know, people say the Lord works in mysterious ways; there was a reason for that person to be running late that day.
Patience is the key to waiting, and as the Old Testament book of Proverbs rightly states, it is a virtue—a good trait that allows us to remain calm and composed in challenging situations or when dealing with difficult people. And so we wait, and wait and wait…
Psalm 62:5-6
Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.
