BE THE BIGGER PERSON

Luke 23:34
Jesus said, “Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.”

Earlier this summer, protests erupted across the country, some of which turned violent. And then, people began intentionally driving their vehicles into crowds, causing harm to others. And there has been an increase in shootings as well. All of this has left me wondering, what on earth is wrong with people? Have we gotten so wrapped up in the issues that we have forgotten how to get along?

My husband is a TV person. As soon as he wakes up, he turns on the TV and it’s always to the news channels. I try to stay informed about current events, but I don’t need to listen to hours of biased news stories. All I hear is people arguing about who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s like those protestors in the streets. The Civil War ended in 1865, we were no longer a country divided, we were now one nation under God, indivisible. But yet today, I feel like we are still two sides constantly fighting against one another. And they are not accomplishing anything but making a spectacle of themselves. Somehow, we need to learn to work together, not against each other. After all, the bigger person is the one who walks away from a fight, not the one who throws the first punch.

Psalm 149:4
For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.

The Bible instructs us to improve ourselves, love our adversaries, and forgive those who harm us. This doesn’t imply that we should tolerate their mistreatment, but rather that we should demonstrate more of God’s love than our own desires. The most prominent example of this is Jesus’ betrayal by his friends, persecution by the people, and crucifixion for our sins. Despite these hardships, his words were, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” His extraordinary capacity for love and forgiveness is evident in that single sentence. Reach out and honor him by demonstrating that you are the superior person. Instead of joining the argument, simply walk away from it. You will never lose when you share the love of Christ with others. Your actions will be blessed, and perhaps you will even inspire others to recognize that there are better ways to express ourselves than by attempting to divide our nation into factions, labeling individuals as either right or wrong. Let’s begin by following Jesus and living a life in Him and for Him.

Ephesians 4:31-32
Get rid of all the bitterness, rage, anger and harsh words and slander, as well as all the types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tender hearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
