LIFE'S UPS AND DOWNS

Psalm 55:22
Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

When I was a teenager, I absolutely loved riding roller coasters. I would run to get back in line to ride again and again. The thrill of climbing that hill, the clinking of the cog; click, click, click until you reached the top and then the drop down the other side—oh, the thrill!

Do you ever feel like life is like riding a roller coaster? One day is up, and the next is down. Then there are days when you feel like you’re doing loop-de-loops and hanging upside down. I think we all have days like that at some point in our lives, maybe some more than others. I don’t know about you, but during these times, I feel myself reaching out to Jesus even more. I ask him to show me the way to get through these ups and downs. When I’m struggling through these days, I would rather be on that old wooden roller coaster with my hands in the air, screaming at the top of my lungs as I plunge to the bottom.

I suppose now, when I raise my hands, I’m seeking something else. When the rollercoaster of life becomes too overwhelming, I find solace in seeking a higher power—God’s help to guide me through this ride called life.

Isaiah 40:28-29
Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

You know, sometimes when life seems like it’s just too much, maybe we should just get off that roller coaster. Put our feet on solid ground, take a deep breath and say; okay Lord, you got my attention. I see now that I was just trying to do too much. The ride was no longer a thrill, it was exhausting. Teach me to slow down. Help me to see everything that I have missed while trying to do it all.

We all know that the Sabbath was created as a day of rest, a time to stop working and focus on spiritual renewal, serving as a reset for the week ahead. Many of us can recall when on Sundays, many stores were closed, gas stations were shut down, and alcohol wasn’t available for sale. Sundays were dedicated to worship and family gatherings. Regrettably, society has drifted away from these core values. I understand that some of us have jobs that require us to work on Sundays, necessitating our presence at work to make a living. However, for those who don’t have to be at work, how about spending that time with your family? Turn off the TV, put away your phone, and reconnect with your loved ones. Perhaps even consider going for a ride on a real roller coaster.

Psalm 46:10 states, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Be still, stop, sit, listen, in the quiet moments connect with God, listen for his guidance and experience his presence. Life doesn’t have to be like that roller coaster, it can be a walk in the park, a walk with God.
