WILL WE EVER LEARN
Habakkuk 1:2-4
2) How long, O Lord, must I call for help? But you do not listen! “Violence is everywhere!” I cry. But you do not come to save.
3) Must I forever see these evil deeds? Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight.
4) The law has become paralyzed and there is no justice in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, so that justice has become perverted.
You would expect to hear about the violence and destruction in cities across our country on the evening news. However, this passage I just read was from biblical times, around 600 BC during the rise of the Babylonian Empire.
We see over and over again history repeating itself. There have been uprisings and fighting across many nations for well over 2,000 years, since before Christ, and still we have not learned how to get along, to put our differences aside, and work together to become true disciples of Christ. To be great leaders and teachers so that our children and those that will follow will be led by fine example, not by coarse action.
We obviously have not learned from our past, or these conflicts wouldn’t still be happening; yet it seems the current situations that are taking place are being instigated by our younger generations. Maybe we are at fault for not teaching them better; maybe we have failed at our duties as teachers and mentors. At some point, someone needs to take a stand and say, “Enough is enough.” The people leading these uprisings, causing the destruction, and taking lives need to be held accountable for their actions.
2 Chronicles 19:5-7
5) He appointed judges throughout the nation in all the fortified towns,
6) and he said to them, “Always think carefully before pronouncing judgment. Remember that you do not judge to please people but to please the Lord. He will be with you when you render the verdict in each case.
7) Fear the Lord and judge with integrity, for the Lord our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes.”
Habakkuk 1:4 stated it clearly: “The law has become paralyzed, and there is no justice in the courts.” Sadly, things have not changed much. I’ve seen firsthand the need for improvement in our judicial system. There is a lot of work to be done there.
So, I will leave you with this from Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” For the peacemakers don’t just try to keep the peace; we work together to resolve the conflicts and bring the people together.
