LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE
Matthew 5:14-16
You are the light of the world - like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father.
I recently attended a workshop at my church, focused on discovering our purpose. We learned that the first step is to identify our core values and spiritual strengths. Then, we should reflect on our past experiences. By noting what stood out in each area, we can identify the common ground and overlap between these areas. This is where we find our purpose.
Our life is a journey and can take us many places. Some good, some not so good. Sometimes our journey will take us down a dark road and we lose our way. That is when you need to take a look at your GPS, and I don’t mean your Global Positioning System but your God’s Purpose System. This is when you stop and ask God, “What am I doing? Where am I heading? What is my purpose in life? And then you pray for God’s guidance to get you back on track.
When you seek your purpose, you recognize your unique gifts and passions and pursue opportunities to serve God and others. I see so much of that here in our church—people serving God in various ways. From the van drivers to our greeter who welcomes everyone who enters, from the tech crew in the back of the church to the musicians and worship singers on stage, everyone has found a purpose and a way to serve God.
If you are not sure where to start, try starting with yourself. Become healthy, happy, confident and present and the right path will reveal itself.
Romans 12:6-8
In his Grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership abilities, take responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.
You’re probably wondering if I learned anything from that workshop, and I did. I left feeling accomplished, knowing that my journey has taken me far, but there’s still more road ahead and more purposes to fulfill. I also discovered that I’m not alone in this quest for purpose. Others are on the same journey, and they might just need a little encouragement to reach their goals. After all, I didn’t get here by myself; someone saw my light shining.
Are you shining? Many of us spend a significant amount of time on our electronic devices, which hinders our ability to connect with others. It’s crucial that we make an effort to interact with those around us, as we may overlook the people God has placed in our lives and the purpose they may have for us.
Proverbs 4:18
The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines even brighter until the full light of day.
In this passage, the imagery of dawn is used to illustrate how the light of a righteous person grows and illuminates the world.
Go shine your light.
